Que: Do we always have to treat all thyroid nodules?
Ans: Yes, thyroid nodules should always be tested and treated accordingly.
Que: What are the symptoms of a thyroid nodule?
Ans: Difficulty swallowing
Difficulty breathing
Swelling in the neck leads o disfigurement of
Persistent cough
Fatigue
Anxiety
Weight loss or gain
Irregular- change in a heartbeat
Hoarseness
Changes in your voice
Que: Why not surgery for thyroid nodules?
Ans: The standard course of therapy for both benign and malignant thyroid nodules is surgery. A minimally invasive therapy option with benefits is thyroid ablation to remove the nodule instead of surgery.
Que: Are thyroid nodules cancerous?
Ans: Most thyroid nodules-Lesion are benign (APPROX 90%). Hyperthyroidism can occur when these nodules create too much thyroid hormone. Almost typically, thyroid nodules that produce too much thyroid hormone are benign.
Que: What if my nodule turns out to be cancerous?
Ans: We always do and recommend getting the FANAC test done to know the nature of the tissue and don’t treat patients randomly.
As per recent scientific guidelines, benign nodules, which are the majority of nodules, can be and should be treated with ablation therapy, so the thyroid gland is preserved and saved to give the thyroid hormone necessary and not be dependent on medicines.
How to diagnose Thyroid Nodules:
1. Ultrasound Scan USG
2. Thyroid function tests (T3, T4, TSH, TG AB)
3. Blood Tests
4. Fine Needle Aspiration biopsy (FNAC-Definitive test to do know the nature of tissue
What is the Advanced NON-SURGICAL Treat
ment OPTIONS Available for Thyroid nodules?
Nonsurgical and minimally invasive treatment modalities, such as Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) and Microwave Ablation (MWA) are being used to treat thyroid nodules and yield good results and yet patients don’t have
to take thyroid replacement therapy after the procedure which is otherwise needed after thyroidectomy.
Benefits of Thermal Microwave Ablation:
· Minimally invasive and Day Care Procedure
· Local Anesthesia is given, not general anesthesia or sedation
· Less Morbidity-side effects
· Faster return to normal activities
· Less Trauma to the body as involves only needle
· Fewer Complications
How is MWA-RFA Procedure is Perfor
med for Thyroid nodules?
An experienced interventional radiologist will conduct microwave ablation of the thyroid nodule during this Microwave Ablation Procedure after determining that the thyroid nodule is benign. Under t
the proper imaging (ultrasound) guidance, the microwave antenna needle is introduced into the thyroid nodule. After being properly positioned, the microwave antenna is turned on to heat and kill the thyroid nodule. The ablation needle may need to be moved in order to completely remove the thyroid nodule. A thin bandage and no sutures are typically used to cover one to two tiny incisions on the skin at the conclusion of the treatment. After the surgery, the patient is discharged in 3 to 4 hours
